Facial Filler Procedure Facts and Common Concerns

Facial Filler Procedure Facts

At GoodSkin, our approach to filler procedures goes beyond simply creating a filled face. We firmly believe in preserving and correcting your facial bone structure to achieve natural and transformative results. As we age, the loss of volume and bone mass becomes apparent, impacting our facial appearance.

Our philosophy revolves around harnessing fillers' power to maintain and correct your unique facial bone structure. Before embarking on any treatment, we conduct a thorough diagnosis, carefully examining your bone structure and fat pads. This step is crucial in determining the most suitable filler product to preserve your facial structure, reduce signs of aging, and enhance lift and contours.

By aligning our treatment with your needs and unique anatomy, we aim to reveal the best version of yourself, ensuring that the results appear harmonious and in tune with your natural features. By emphasizing preserving your unique bone structure, our fillers work to rejuvenate and revitalize, giving you a refreshed and youthful appearance that truly stands the test of time.

Frequently Asked Filler Questions

The GoodSkin process begins with a detailed consultation, diagnosis, and creation of a Healthy Aging Plan. Depending on your goals, unique look, and our analysis, fillers may be included in the crafted treatment plan. If you plan to receive fillers or have received them to maintain a more natural appearance as you age, you may have some questions about the process. Below are some of the more common questions we encounter. If you have any additional concerns, please do not hesitate to bring them up with our expert staff, who can provide any necessary guidance or follow-up information.

What to do if I have a bruise?

To help alleviate bruising, we recommend the topical application of arnica–a natural ointment commonly used to reduce bruising. You can find this in the natural foods section of your grocery store or at local pharmacies. Please feel free to contact our office for a complimentary laser treatment to help reduce bruising.

What are the symptoms of a reaction to dermal fillers?

These reactions range in severity and time after treatment, from swelling and erythema to pain, nodule formation, pigmentation, and abscess formation. Specifically, HA-based fillers are usually well-tolerated, although skin induration and injection-site reactions are not uncommon with their use. If there is any soreness/tenderness/inflammation after your filler procedure, it is okay to take Tylenol. If you experience anything needing adjusting or you have additional questions, please contact us at (310) 400-6534.

Can I wear makeup after dermal filler treatments?

For at least 6-8 hours, you should keep clear of makeup to allow the skin to breathe and mend naturally without interruptions. Applying makeup straight after dermal fillers could clog your pores and cause the area to be prone to infection.

What if my dermal filler results are not what I expected?

Fillers take 3-4 weeks to settle and integrate into your tissues properly. During this period, there may be swelling, soreness, and bumps that will all eventually smooth out. If you see any irregularities after 3-4 weeks following treatment, do not worry–this will be accessed and, if needed, corrected in your follow-up appointment via touch-ups.

We provide a customized and comprehensive post-treatment plan to ensure you heal quickly and correctly. This includes a personal patient advocate available for questions, complimentary follow-up appointments to evaluate progress, and a range of post-treatment therapies to speed up the process.

Can I sleep after dermal fillers?

Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach for 24 hours post-treatment to prevent swelling. We recommend you sleep elevated on your back and use pillows to stabilize yourself. It's common to experience tenderness and asymmetrical swelling when sleeping on your side within three weeks of your treatment.

How soon after the filler procedure can I have a facial?

Our facialists work with the most sensitive skin types and circumstances. We have expertise in performing facials for clients who’ve had recent injections without disturbing the integrity of the treatment. They are skilled at dealing with sensitized, fragile skin and can tailor the treatments to focus on lymphatic drainage, which can improve swelling effects from injections. For facials outside of our clinics, we recommend you wait 2-3 weeks.

Can fillers drift?

While fillers can migrate, this is extremely rare and can be avoided by choosing a qualified injector. If there is a concern, we can use ultrasound technology to accurately assess and provide solutions.

How long is the recovery time after having dermal fillers?

Generally, recovery lasts one to two days. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately following a filler procedure. In fact, some people schedule their treatment during their lunch hour and return to work right after.

There are very few restrictions with dermal fillers. Some people experience mild bruising and swelling after the procedure. If this occurs, you can expect it to wear off in 1-2 weeks. However, the filler will not be fully settled for an average of three weeks. After the procedure, the treated area will be slightly red, lasting only a few hours.

Can I take painkillers before or after having dermal filler injections?

We recommend avoiding anti-inflammatory painkillers before and after the procedure, as these can thin the blood and increase the risk of redness, swelling, bleeding, and bruising. Ibuprofen and aspirin are the most well-known anti-inflammatory drugs.

However, during your diagnosis, you must let us know what medication you’re taking so we can advise on possible contraindications (situations in which you should avoid taking your medication).

If your practitioner has applied a local anesthetic cream, it’s normal to feel like the pain is getting worse as the effects of this cream wear off. Should you experience pain, apply a cold compress to the area to help reduce swelling, and take Tylenol every four hours. If the pain is not subsiding, please contact our office at (310) 400-6534.

Can I exercise after having dermal filler injections?

We recommend waiting 2-3 days after a dermal filler procedure before doing any strenuous exercise—this will limit bruising and swelling. If you have had a minor amount treated and are not concerned about the bruising and swelling, you may begin to exercise the next day, as the exercise will not affect the integrity of the treatment. If you resume a workout within 24 hours, we advise low impact and caution that this can increase swelling and tenderness.

How soon can I drink alcohol after having dermal filler injections?

Although drinking alcohol won’t affect the long-term results of having dermal fillers, it can increase bruising and swelling. It’s best to avoid alcohol for at least two days after having the treatment.

How soon after having dermal fillers can I fly?

There should be no issue with flying after having dermal fillers. To limit swelling, we recommend avoiding alcohol and salt, and you can take an antihistamine such as Claritin or Benadryl.

How soon after having cosmetic fillers can I sunbathe?

Avoid sunbathing, sunbeds, and intense heat (such as saunas and Turkish baths) for one week after treatment. If you go out in the sun, always wear sunscreen. You should also avoid exposing your skin to extreme cold for one week after treatment. We recommend a minimum of 24 hours for spray tans.

How soon after having dermal fillers can I touch my face?

Don’t touch or rub the treated area for at least six hours after treatment. After that, you can gently clean the area and apply light makeup.

Can I smoke or vape after dermal filler procedures?

No, please wait at least 24 hours before vaping to avoid exposure to bacteria. Smoking will prolong the healing process and cause side effects like swelling and bruising to last longer should they occur.

Smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outer layers of your skin. This limits blood flow, meaning your skin doesn’t receive as much oxygen or nutrients.
